Our PhD student Tome Eftimov presented the paper “POS tagging-probability weighted method for matching the Internet recipe ingredients with food composition data” on the 7th International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval, which was part from the 7th International Join Conference on Knowledge Discovery, Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management , Lisbon, Portugal.
Communication and collaboration with stakeholders is of paramount importance for the ERA Chair sustainability.
ISO-FOOD will involve partners from the industry, science, policy- and decision-makers and civil society in an open dialogue to discuss the challenges of their involvement into the ISO-FOOD’s research and other activities. The goal is to bring together academics, industry, government and civil society to articulate common interests in food research and knowledge and collaborate in solving societal problems. Stakeholders will be invited to participate in shaping the ISO-FOOD research agenda and designing projects which will be relevant for the society, which shall be a contribution to the inclusive governance and decision-making.
The Stakeholder Workshop will be organised in November 2015 at the Jožef Stefan Institute. Representatives of business, academia, governmental organisations and NGOs are invited to present their views on the food quality and traceability issues, and become engaged into a stimulating discussion on the emerging topics of the food research, generating ideas and initiating collaborations. The key conclusions of the workshop will be published through a post-workshop press release.

Two ring tests with up to 10 participating European laboratories will be organised.
The goal of such exercises is to provide external assessment of the laboratories’ performance, so as to improve the quality of analytical results. The exercises will be designed, test samples prepared, measurements will be calibrated and results will be validated by the ISO-FOOD senior research staff. ISO-FOOD will also evaluate and communicate the final results. Following exercises are planned:
- Element speciation in foodstuffs (2017)
- Stable isotopes of C, N and O in foodstuffs (2018)
Four exploratory workshops will be organised with key note speakers and invited lecturers, covering the main scientific topics of the Chair the most reputable scientists in the respective fields of research will be invited.
During the workshops, ample time will be devoted to discussions, exploring the possibilities for future research topics and, if applicable, on-site solving of practical technical problems. Selected papers presented at the workshops will be published in international scientific journals. Key note lectures will be made available at the institute’s video lectures web site.
The topics will cover:
- Food traceability methodologies (2015/16)
- Nanoparticles in food (2016/17)
- Isotopic techniques in food characterisation (2017/18)
- Metrology in food analyses (2018/19)
From 25th to 27th November 2015, we will organize the ISO-FOOD Hg Training Course “Quality assurance for Hg measurements in food and environmental samples” at the Jožef Stefan Institute, Reactor center, Ljubljana, Slovenia. No participation fee is required. Travel and subsistence costs are not covered.
Registration opens on 28th May and closes on 17th July 2015!

Presentations of the IsoFood Hg Training Course
The ISO-FOOD Hg Training Course “Quality assurance for Hg measurements in food and environmental samples” was organized from 25th to 27th November 2015, in Reactor Centre, Podgorica, Brinje 40, SI-1262 Dol pri Ljubljani. The photos from the training course are available in the following gallery.
Mercury is a very hazardous substance for human health and the environment. The European legislation requires that adequate information on the presence of this element is obtained, but measuring reliably Hg contents, the Hg speciation or the Hg isotopic signature in food and environmental samples is challenging. This training course aims to provide you with the skills required to produce quality assured data.
#1 Traceability and use of CRM and RM
#2 Single laboratory validation
#3 Internal quality control
#4 Inter-laboratory comparisons
#5 Uncertainty evaluation
Experience based learning
Both theory and practice will be combined throughout the course to give you the opportunity to put the concepts learned into practice. You are encouraged to bring your own specific case studies/problems, so we can tailor the course to your specific needs.
The course is designed for early stage researchers (doctoral and postdoctoral level) and application scientists, i.e. from the National Reference Laboratories and the Official Control Laboratories from the EU network on ‘heavy metals’ in food and feed. A working knowledge of English is essential (written and spoken). You are requested to familiarise yourself with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.
Four thematic Summer Schools will be organized for undergraduate and graduate students.
The students will spend a week in the laboratories of one or more of the participating Departments and will get acquainted with some novel analytical methods and techniques and will get the opportunity for practical work in the laboratory. Schools will be organized by the senior research staff of the Jožef Stefan Institute.
Four summer schools will be organized:
- Radiochemical analysis of food (2015)
- Authentication of food products by isotope and elemental fingerprinting (2016)
- Element speciation in food analysis (2017)
- Nanoparticles in foodstuffs (2018)
Calls for participants will be published about 6 months before the courses will begin.
Our PhD student Tome Eftimov presented the paper “Ingredients matching in bakery products” on the Conference on Data Mining and Data Warehouses (SiKDD 2015), which was part from the 18th International Multiconference on Information Society, Ljubljana, Slovenia.
